Brian Hunsaker transforma una historia personal en una canción épica. “Power Over You” combina la fuerza del metal clásico con una atmósfera cinematográfica que refleja lucha, control y liberación. • 1 - ¿Qué te inspiró a escribir esta canción y cómo surgió la historia de la hechicera y su cómplice? // What inspired you to write this song, and how did the story of the sorceress and her accomplice come about?

Spa: La canción puede entenderse en dos niveles. En la superficie, habla de algo que muchos vivimos: una relación tóxica, sentirse tan atraído por alguien que no podés alejarte aunque sepas que no va a terminar bien.Pero el verdadero motor detrás de la música es una historia más grande y mítica. Trata sobre una poderosa hechicera que, tras años de exilio, regresa para conquistar el mundo, pero no sola: ata a su cómplice con magia oscura. Es un choque entre el poder, el destino y la voluntad de hacer lo que sea necesario para ganar. Todo surgió de la primera línea: “Rising up from the ashes of myself”. En retrospectiva, me di cuenta de que yo también estaba resurgiendo de mis propias cenizas. Había dejado la música por dos años para dedicarme a ser padre, hasta que la muerte repentina de mi mejor amigo me empujó a volver. Fue un momento clave, y esta canción nació de eso.

Eng: The song can be thought about on two different levels. On the surface, it’s a story many of us have been through—a toxic relationship, being so drawn toward someone that you can’t pull away even knowing it won’t end well.But the real story, the one that drove the music, is much bigger and more mythic. It’s about a powerful sorceress who returns from exile to take over the world—not alone, but by binding her unwilling accomplice to her will with dark magic. It’s a clash of power, destiny, and the will to do whatever it takes to win. The idea came from the opening line: “Rising up from the ashes of myself.” In hindsight, I realized I too was rising from my own ashes. I had quit music for two years to focus on being a new father, and only returned when my best friend suddenly passed away. It was a pivotal moment, and this song is a direct result of that.

• 2 - ¿Qué aspectos de tu vida o emociones se reflejan en la letra y cómo querés que la gente se sienta al escucharla? // What aspects of your life or emotions are reflected in the lyrics, and how do you want people to feel when they listen to it?

Spa: Aunque la historia es de fantasía, las emociones son totalmente reales. Habla de esa sensación universal de estar controlado, ya sea por otra persona, por las circunstancias o por tus propios demonios internos. También trata sobre sentirse atrapado y finalmente encontrar la fuerza para luchar y recuperar tu poder.Quiero que los oyentes sientan empoderamiento, la sensación de tener el control absoluto de su propio destino, y por un instante, incluso del de los demás. La canción es un viaje: empieza desde la vulnerabilidad y termina con un rugido triunfante. Espero que funcione como una catarsis, una liberación sonora que haga sentir a la gente fuerte y desafiante.

Eng: While the story is a fantasy, the emotions are very real. It’s about that universal feeling of being controlled—whether by another person, by circumstances, or by your own inner demons. It’s about feeling trapped and then finding the strength to fight back and reclaim your power.Ultimately, I want listeners to feel empowered, to have absolute control over their own destiny—and maybe, for a fleeting moment, even over others’. The song is a journey that starts in vulnerability and ends with a powerful, triumphant roar. I hope it serves as a catharsis—a sonic release that makes people feel strong and defiant.

• 3 - ¿Cómo definirías tu estilo y la atmósfera que buscaste transmitir en esta canción? // How would you define your style and the atmosphere you sought to convey in this song?

Spa: Mi estilo es una fusión entre la potencia del metal clásico y la profundidad emocional del rock moderno. Crecí escuchando las voces épicas de Ronnie James Dio y las guitarras intrincadas de los grandes guitarristas de los 80, y esa esencia siempre está en mi música.Busco crear una atmósfera cinematográfica, que haga sentir al oyente dentro de una película, con momentos enormes y otros íntimos. En “Power Over You”, el ambiente es puro fantasy épico: oscuro, mágico y algo peligroso. Es la banda sonora de una batalla final a los pies de una pirámide al atardecer. Me gusta crear experiencias impredecibles, con arreglos progresivos y armonías vocales que rompan fórmulas.

Eng: My style is a fusion of classic metal’s power and modern rock’s emotional depth. I grew up on the soaring, epic vocals of Ronnie James Dio and the intricate guitar work of the great ’80s players, and that DNA is always in my music.The atmosphere I strive for is cinematic—music that feels like a movie, full of huge, sweeping moments and quiet, intimate ones. For “Power Over You,” the vibe is pure fantasy epic: dark, magical, and a little dangerous. It’s the soundtrack to a final magical battle at the foot of a pyramid at sunset. I love creating unpredictable experiences with progressive arrangements and layered vocal harmonies.

• 4 - ¿Cómo fue colaborar con otros músicos a distancia y qué aprendiste de esa experiencia? //  What was it like collaborating with other musicians remotely, and what did you learn from that experience?

Spa: Fue una experiencia mágica y una muestra de cómo la tecnología puede conectar artistas en todo el mundo. Tuve la suerte de trabajar con músicos increíbles.La mejor historia viene de mi baterista, Mats Eriksson, que vive en Suecia. Originalmente “Power Over You” era una pieza más tranquila, sin guitarras pesadas. Le envié la maqueta y su pista de batería, potente y precisa, cambió todo el rumbo. Regrabé las guitarras para hacerlas más pesadas y el tema se transformó en una verdadera power ballad. Luego, Raymond en teclados y Clif en bajo elevaron aún más la canción. Lo mágico de la colaboración remota es que otro artista puede descubrir en tu música algo que vos ni siquiera sabías que estaba ahí.

Eng: It was a magical experience and a testament to how technology can connect artists across the globe. I was incredibly fortunate to work with amazing musicians.The best story is about my drummer, Mats Eriksson, who’s based in Sweden. Originally, “Power Over You” was a quieter, atmospheric piece with no heavy guitars. I sent him the demo, and the powerful, thunderous drum track he sent back completely changed the song’s direction. I re-recorded the guitars to be heavier, and that’s when it became a true power ballad. Then Raymond’s keyboards and Clif’s bass took it even higher. The magic of remote collaboration is that someone across the world can hear something in your song you didn’t even know was there.

• 5 - Venís de hacer tributos a Dio y de tu experiencia con ShredFest. ¿Cómo ha cambiado tu forma de componer hoy? //  Coming from tributes to Dio and your experience with ShredFest, how has your songwriting changed today?

Spa: Mi experiencia instrumental, sobre todo con proyectos como ShredFest, me dio el lenguaje y las herramientas para escribir música compleja y técnica. Era todo sobre el poder de la guitarra.Tocar la música de Dio me enseñó la importancia de la historia. Él era un narrador increíble, y me hizo entender que una voz poderosa y una buena narrativa son el corazón de la canción. Hoy, la gran diferencia es que la historia y la melodía vocal van primero. Las guitarras siguen siendo intensas, pero ahora están al servicio de la emoción, no son el centro. Eso hace que el proceso sea más completo y gratificante.

Eng: My instrumental background, especially with projects like ShredFest, gave me the language and technical tools to write complex, layered music. It was all about the power of the guitar.Performing Dio’s music taught me the importance of storytelling. Dio was one of the greatest storytellers in metal—his voice and conviction could make anything compelling. The biggest change now is that the story and vocal melody come first. The guitar work is still intricate and powerful, but it serves the emotion, not the other way around. It’s a more complete and satisfying way to write.

• 6 - La historia detrás de la grabación del EP Where Dreamers Fall es muy particular. ¿Podés contarnos sobre el “Car EP” y los desafíos de grabar en un lugar tan poco común? // The story behind the recording of the Where Dreamers Fall EP is a very unique one. Can you tell us about the “Car EP” and the challenges of recording in such an unconventional environment?

Spa: Grabé todo el EP dentro de mi auto, durante mis descansos del trabajo. Después de que nacieron mis hijos gemelos, mi vida cambió por completo y no tenía tiempo ni espacio para un estudio. El único lugar tranquilo era mi Ford Freestyle, así que lo convertí en una cabina de grabación móvil.El mayor desafío fue el entorno: sin energía adecuada, sin aislamiento acústico, y tratando de grabar sin que la gente afuera pensara que estaba loco. Pero valió la pena. Demostró que si realmente querés crear, siempre hay una forma.El momento más increíble fue grabando “Power Over You”. Tenía la música del puente pero ninguna melodía. Solo unos minutos antes de volver al trabajo, improvisé una toma y esa fue la versión final. Capturar ese instante puro de inspiración en el asiento trasero fue pura magia.

Eng: The entire Where Dreamers Fall EP was recorded in my car during lunch breaks. After my twin sons were born, life changed completely—there was no time or quiet space for a studio. The only place I had was my Ford Freestyle, so I turned it into a mobile vocal booth.The biggest challenge was the environment—no proper power, no soundproofing, trying to record without people outside thinking I’d lost it. But it was worth it. It proved that if you’re passionate enough, you can create anywhere.The craziest moment came while recording “Power Over You.” I had the bridge music but no vocal melody. With just minutes left before work, I hit record and improvised one take—and that became the final version. Capturing that instant of raw inspiration in the back seat was pure magic.

• 7 - ¿Qué podemos esperar de tu próximo EP Where Dreamers Fall y hay nuevos sonidos que te gustaría explorar? // What can we expect from your upcoming EP Where Dreamers Fall, and are there any new sounds or ideas you’d like to explore?

Spa: “Power Over You” es la puerta de entrada al sonido del EP. Pueden esperar más de ese metal melódico y cinematográfico, con un enfoque fuerte en las voces y las historias épicas. Cada canción tiene su propio mundo.El próximo single se llama “Edge of the World” y lleva esa energía aún más lejos, con un toque progresivo y una historia de invasión alienígena. Siempre busco explorar nuevos sonidos, y este tema es un paso más en ese camino narrativo y experimental. Los otros dos completarán el EP: una balada muy emocional y mi composición más progresiva hasta ahora.

Eng: “Power Over You” is the perfect gateway to the EP’s sound—cinematic, melodic metal with a strong focus on powerful vocals and epic storytelling. Each song is its own world.The next single, “Edge of the World,” takes that energy even further, pushing into progressive and sci-fi territory—it’s a full-on alien invasion metal song! I’m always looking to explore new sounds, and this track is a step deeper into that story-driven world. The other two songs will round out the EP: one emotional ballad and my most progressive piece yet.
