Interview with Gianfranco GFN about his album “GIOMANÈ”

Con el lanzamiento de GIOMANÈ, su quinto álbum de estudio, grabado entre Suiza y Costa de Marfil, el disco combina groove, soul, jazz y acid jazz dentro de su universo "GIAZZ!", apostando por un sonido orgánico y profundamente humano. En esta entrevista, el artista habla sobre el proceso detrás del álbum, la importancia del groove como forma de vida, el paso del estudio al escenario y cómo el álbum funciona no solo como una obra terminada, sino como el punto de partida de una nueva etapa creativa.

1- “GIOMANÈ” is your fifth album. Looking back, do you feel this is the record where you really found your own sound? // “GIOMANÈ” es tu quinto álbum. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿sentís que este es el disco en el que realmente encontraste tu propio sonido?

EN: I do feel that “GIOMANÈ” represents a very important step in finding my own sound. It’s not that I didn’t know who I was before, but with this album everything feels more natural and more honest. The blend of groove, soul, jazz and acid-jazz finally feels fully assumed. I’m no longer searching — I’m expressing.

ES: Siento que “GIOMANÈ” representa un paso muy importante en la búsqueda de mi propio sonido. No es que antes no supiera quién era, pero con este álbum todo se siente más natural y más honesto. La mezcla de groove, soul, jazz y acid jazz finalmente está completamente asumida. Ya no estoy buscando, estoy expresando.

2- For someone discovering your music for the first time, how would you explain what the “GIAZZ!” universe is? // Para alguien que descubre tu música por primera vez, ¿cómo explicarías qué es el universo “GIAZZ!”?

EN: GIAZZ! is my musical playground. It’s a mix of groove, soul, jazz, acid-jazz and modern influences, all driven by feel rather than labels. It’s warm, organic, and very human music made to be felt as much as it is to be heard.

ES: GIAZZ! es mi patio de juegos musical. Es una mezcla de groove, soul, jazz, acid jazz e influencias modernas, todo guiado más por la sensación que por las etiquetas. Es una música cálida, orgánica y muy humana, hecha para sentirse tanto como para escucharse.

3- You recorded the album between Switzerland and Ivory Coast. What did each place bring to the project, and how can you hear that in the final record? // Grabaste el álbum entre Suiza y Costa de Marfil. ¿Qué aportó cada lugar al proyecto y cómo se percibe eso en el disco final?

EN: Switzerland brought structure, precision and reflection. Ivory Coast brought energy, rhythm and spontaneity. You can hear it in the album: the balance between tight arrangements and raw, instinctive moments. That contrast became one of the strengths of “GIOMANÈ”.

ES: Suiza aportó estructura, precisión y reflexión. Costa de Marfil aportó energía, ritmo y espontaneidad. Eso se escucha en el álbum: el equilibrio entre arreglos ajustados y momentos más crudos e instintivos. Ese contraste se convirtió en una de las fortalezas de “GIOMANÈ”.

4- Many songs started out with just your guitar and a click track. Was there any track that ended up going in a direction you didn’t expect? // Muchas canciones empezaron solo con tu guitarra y un click. ¿Hubo algún tema que terminó yendo hacia un lugar que no esperabas?

EN: Yes, definitely. Some tracks started very simply, just guitar and click, and then completely opened up once the musicians got involved. When you work with great players, the music often knows better than you where it wants to go — and I love leaving space for that.

ES: Sí, sin duda. Algunos temas empezaron de manera muy simple, solo guitarra y click, y luego se abrieron completamente cuando los músicos se involucraron. Cuando trabajás con grandes músicos, muchas veces la música sabe mejor que vos hacia dónde quiere ir, y me encanta dejar espacio para eso.

5- “Sing The Song” was the first track to introduce the project. After everything that came after, what place does that song hold for you now? // “Sing The Song” fue el primer tema que presentó el proyecto. Después de todo lo que vino después, ¿qué lugar ocupa hoy esa canción para vos?

EN: “Sing The Song” feels like the doorway to the whole project. It set the tone, the spirit and the message. Today, it still represents the core idea of “GIOMANÈ”: sharing music as a collective and positive energy.

ES: “Sing The Song” se siente como la puerta de entrada a todo el proyecto. Marcó el tono, el espíritu y el mensaje. Hoy sigue representando la idea central de “GIOMANÈ”: compartir la música como una energía colectiva y positiva.

6- Is there any song on the album that feels especially close to you, or that was harder to finish? // ¿Hay alguna canción del álbum que sientas especialmente cercana o que haya sido más difícil de terminar?

EN: There are several, but one or two songs required more patience and emotional investment. Those are often the ones that stay closest to your heart, because you had to fight a little to let them exist in the right way.

ES: Hay varias, pero una o dos canciones requirieron más paciencia y compromiso emocional. Suelen ser las que quedan más cerca del corazón, porque tuviste que luchar un poco para dejarlas existir de la manera correcta.

7- Now that “GIOMANÈ” is being played live, what changes when these songs move from the studio to the stage? // Ahora que “GIOMANÈ” empezó a sonar en vivo, ¿qué cambia cuando estas canciones pasan del estudio al escenario?

EN: Live, the songs breathe differently. They become more open, more dynamic. The interaction with the band and the audience adds another dimension. Studio versions are like photographs — live versions are living moments.

ES: En vivo, las canciones respiran de otra manera. Se vuelven más abiertas y más dinámicas. La interacción con la banda y el público suma otra dimensión. Las versiones de estudio son como fotografías; las versiones en vivo son momentos vivos.

8- With the album now out, do you see it as the end of a chapter, or more as the starting point for what’s next? // Con el álbum ya publicado, ¿lo ves como el cierre de una etapa o más bien como el punto de partida de lo que viene?

EN: I see “GIOMANÈ” more as a starting point than an ending. It feels like a solid foundation for what’s coming next. The door is wide open, and creatively, I feel very free right now.

ES: Veo “GIOMANÈ” más como un punto de partida que como un final. Se siente como una base sólida para lo que viene. La puerta está bien abierta y, creativamente, me siento muy libre en este momento.
