Interview with Johnny Barr about is single "Break the Fall"
Desde Glasgow, Johnny Barr regresa con "Break the Fall", su nuevo sencillo junto al talentoso chelista Calum Ingram. La canción, que se lanza el 28 de marzo de 2025, marca el inicio de una nueva etapa artística impulsada por su recorrido personal como músico y terapeuta.
Influenciado por el rock progresivo, los arreglos vocales de Fleetwood Mac y su reciente formación como musicoterapeuta, Johnny nos presenta una obra cargada de emoción, honestidad y frescura sonora.
1- ¿Cómo llegaste a escribir “Break the Fall”? // How did you come to write "Break the Fall"?
Spa: Fui invitado a participar en algo llamado “The Acoustic Guitar Project” (AGP). El proyecto tiene sede en Canadá y se llevó a Escocia. La idea era que cada persona involucrada compartiera una guitarra y tuviera una semana para escribir una nueva canción y grabarla. Luego, tenías que pasar la guitarra a la siguiente persona. Esta fecha límite me presionó y me impulsó a escribir la canción.
Eng: I was invited to take part in something called “The Acoustic Guitar Project” (AGP). The project is based in Canada and was brought to Scotland. The concept was for each person involved would share one guitar and have 1 week to write a new song and record it. You would then pass the guitar on. This deadline put me under pressure and encouraged me to write the song.
2- ¿Qué te estaba pasando cuando la escribiste? // What was happening to you when you wrote it?
Spa: La canción está inspirada en enfrentar desafíos en la vida y tratar de crecer a partir de los errores cometidos en el pasado. Recientemente terminé mis estudios en musicoterapia antes de escribir esta canción. Como parte del curso, asistimos a sesiones de terapia personal, lo que me dio la oportunidad de profundizar en mi pasado y entenderme mejor. Esta fue la principal inspiración para todas las canciones de mi nuevo EP “Break the Fall”.
Eng: The song is inspired by facing challenges in life and trying to grow from mistakes that have been made in the past. I recently finished my studies in music therapy before writing this song. As part of the course, we attended personal therapy sessions which gave me an opportunity to dig deep into my past and understand myself better. This was the main inspiration for all the songs in my new EP “Break the Fall”.
3- ¿Cómo te sentiste al escribir música otra vez después de un tiempo? // How did it feel to write music again after a while?
Spa: Al principio fue aterrador e intimidante. Creo que pasé mucho tiempo evitando escribir porque me sentía inseguro de mis habilidades. Pero después de participar en el AGP me di cuenta de que tenía mucho más para ofrecer, y se convirtió en una experiencia muy validante. Después de escribir la canción, me sentí orgulloso y motivado para volver a trabajar en mi música original.
Eng: At first it was scary and intimidating. I think I spent a long time avoiding writing because I was insecure of my abilities. But after I took part in the AGP I realised that I had much more to offer and it became a very validating experience. After writing the song, I felt proud and motivated to get back into working on my original music.
4- ¿Qué tiene de especial esta canción para vos? // What is special about this song for you?
Spa: Es la primera canción que he escrito y lanzado en más de 5 años. La canción es el comienzo de mi nuevo viaje en la música y es el catalizador para sumergirme completamente en la escena musical original.
Eng: It is the first song I have written and released in 5+ years. The song is the beginning of my new journey into music and it is the catalyst towards fully immersing myself back into the original music scene.
5- ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Calum Ingram? ¿Te imaginabas que después de tantos años iban a grabar algo juntos? // What was it like working with Calum Ingram? Did you imagine that you would end up recording something together after so many years?
Spa: Siempre es un placer trabajar con Calum. Él también es uno de mis amigos más cercanos y comenzamos nuestras carreras musicales hace mucho tiempo. Nuestro primer concierto en Glasgow fue en el mismo lugar, y ahí fue donde nos conocimos. Calum y yo siempre hemos tenido un vínculo musical especial y naturalmente nos alimentamos mutuamente. Es inevitable que toquemos y escribamos juntos. Fue realmente lindo finalmente sacar algo de manera más oficial con él.
Eng: It is always a pleasure working with Calum. He is also one of my closest friends and we began our music careers many moons ago. Our first gig in Glasgow was the same venue and that is where we met. Calum and I have always had a special musical bond and we naturally feed off each other. Its just an inevitability that we will perform and write together. It was really nice to finally release something more officially with him.
6- ¿En qué momento dijiste “ok, este es el sonido que quiero”? // At what point did you say "ok, this is the sound I want"?
Spa: Creo que cada canción que he escrito recientemente toca varios géneros/estilos. Tengo un gusto musical muy amplio que va desde el rock progresivo o el metal pesado hasta el fingerstyle acústico o incluso bandas sonoras de películas. Me gusta pensar que la música representa todos estos estilos. Quizás todavía estoy, y siempre estaré, en un viaje para encontrar el sonido que quiero, pero eso es emocionante. Para este EP, una vez que establecí a los miembros de la banda y junté todas las partes (con su toque personal) ahí supe que teníamos algo especial.
Eng: I think every song I have recently written dives into several genres/styles. I have a very wide taste of music varying from Progressive rock or heavy metal and right over to acoustic fingerstyle or even film scores. I like to think that the music represents all these styles. Perhaps I am still, and always will be, on a journey to find the sound I want- But that is exciting. For this EP, once I established the band members and brought all the parts together (With their personal touch) that is when I knew we had something special.
7- ¿Qué fue lo más difícil de todo el proceso? // What was the hardest part of the whole process?
Spa: La preorganización y la programación. Junto con una carrera musical a tiempo completo y trabajando con personas muy talentosas y ocupadas, reunir a todos en una misma habitación y grabar la música para luego lanzarla requirió mucha planificación. ¡Este fue un año completo de trabajo para llegar a este punto!
Eng: Pre-organising and scheduling. Alongside a busy full time music career and working with very talented and busy people- Getting everyone in one room and getting the music recorded and released required lots of planning! This has been a full year of work to get to this stage.
8- ¿Qué te gustaría que la gente se lleve después de escucharla? // What would you like people to take away after listening to it?
Spa: Ahora realmente puedo creer que puedo traer mucha más música a este mundo y sentirme confiado en mis habilidades. ¡MIREN ESTE ESPACIO!
