Interview with Night Wolf about his single “Unstoppable”

A veces las colaboraciones nacen de forma bastante simple. Una noche de open mic en Bedford fue el punto de encuentro entre Lois Powell y el productor Night Wolf, y de ahí empezó una serie de canciones hechas entre los dos.

“Unstoppable” es la tercera de esas colaboraciones. El tema mezcla una atmósfera trip hop con un crecimiento lento que termina en un cierre más amplio y emotivo. En esta entrevista hablan de cómo se conocieron, cómo nació la canción y de qué manera fue tomando forma mientras la iban construyendo.

1- ¿Cómo se conocieron ustedes dos y en qué momento se dieron cuenta de que podía salir algo musical de ahí?

How did you two meet, and when did you realize something musical could actually come out of it?

ESP:

L.P: Nos conocimos en una noche de open mic. Creo que Night Wolf se dio cuenta antes que yo, porque me escuchó cantar, pero yo todavía no había escuchado su trabajo. Supongo que después del segundo tema ya me sentía más conforme. En el primero me costaba cantar en ese estilo y además el micrófono no era muy bueno. Igual Death of the Wolf es épica, me encantó la parte vocal.

N.W: Nos conocimos en una noche de open mic en Bedford, en The Flower Pot. En ese momento yo había hecho la canción Lost My Way Home y me di cuenta otra vez de que no me gusta mi propia voz después de escribir la letra. Sentía que esa parte debía cantarla una voz femenina, con un estilo folk, etéreo y un poco inquietante pero elegante. No tenía a nadie con ese estilo en mis contactos, así que empecé a ir a open mic nights para encontrar a alguien. Esa noche Lois cantó y enseguida noté lo talentosa que era y que su voz encajaría muy bien en algunas de mis producciones. Me acerqué después de su presentación y le dije que tenía algunas ideas que necesitaban una voz. Aceptó venir a mi home studio y empezamos a trabajar. Primero hicimos Lost My Way Home. En ese momento todavía estaba terminando de armar el estudio y tratando acústicamente el lugar, así que solo tenía un micrófono bastante básico. La segunda canción fue Death of the Wolf. Yo escribí la primera parte y Lois terminó la otra mitad manteniendo el mismo estado emocional. Para mí la canción tiene un tono bastante oscuro, viene de un momento de duelo, pero Lois también la hizo suya con su letra. A partir de ahí supe que había algo especial y desde entonces tuvo más libertad para sus melodías y letras. Ya hicimos cuatro canciones en bastante poco tiempo y espero que vengan muchas más.

ENG:

L.P: We met at an open mic night. I think Night Wolf realised before me as he heard me sing but I hadn’t heard his work. I guess after the second track I was pleased, the first one we made I was struggling to sing in that style and the mic wasn’t great. Death of the wolf is epic though I loved the vocalisation.

N.W: We met at an open mic night in Bedford at The Flower Pot, I was at a point where I had made the song Lost My Way Home and reminded myself that I do not like my own voice after writing lyrics for the song, I heard the part being sung by a female artist but didn't have any one in my little black book that has this kind of folk like quality and ethereal and haunting when wanted elegant style of singing I heard in my head , I went out to open mic nights to search for a female artist to approach and was just in luck that night as Lois performed and I instantly heard how talented she was and that her voice would work so well on some of my productions, I approached her after she performed and told her I had some ideas I need someone to sing, she then accepted my invitation to my home studio to work on the music. We completed Lost My Way Home first together and I was still in process during this time of sound treating and completing my set up at home so only had a cheaper mic to hand and a basic set up when we recorded the vocals for the first song. The second song Death of the Wolf , I wrote the first part of the song up until Death Of The Wolf, Lois then took over and completed the other half with being able to still keep in the same frame of mind almost as I was when I was writing. However the song does have a darker undertone for me and is from a place of grieving. But Lois also makes it her own within her lyrics. It was from Death Of Wolf I knew there was something special there too and Lois had more free reign over her vocals and lyrics moving forward.

2- “Unstoppable” es ya la tercera canción que hacen juntos. ¿Qué sienten que cambió entre la primera vez que trabajaron y ahora?

“Unstoppable” is already your third song together. What do you feel has changed between the first time you worked together and now?

ESP:

L.P: Ya conocíamos el proceso y sabíamos mejor qué queríamos hacer.

N.W: Como dije antes, nuestras primeras dos canciones ya estaban bastante completas cuando Lois se sumó. Unstoppable fue diferente porque nació de un riff de guitarra que Lois me envió por nota de voz. Apenas lo escuché, ya tenía un patrón de batería en la cabeza. Le pedí que viniera a grabarlo y construimos toda la canción alrededor de ese riff en una tarde. Todo fluyó muy natural. Después de cada toma de voz de Lois íbamos construyendo más elementos alrededor hasta terminar el tema al día siguiente. Fue la primera vez que realmente creamos una canción desde cero juntos.

ENG:

L.P: We knew the process and what we wanted to be better.

N.W: As I said before our first two songs were already basically complete with Lois adding more vocals on the 2nd song, Unstoppable was me hearing a guitar riff Lois had sent me via voice note that I instantly heard a drum pattern forming in my head as I listened. I asked her to come and record this and we then built the whole song around this in an afternoon, everything just flowed and after each vocal take with Lois we built around it and ended up with a finished song the next day.

3- Cuando se juntan a hacer música, ¿cómo suele arrancar todo? ¿Alguna idea suelta, un sonido, una frase…?

When you get together to make music, how does it usually start? A loose idea, a sound, a line…?

ESP:

L.P: Night Wolf suele tener algo de música. Yo la escucho y pienso “ah, ya tengo la letra para eso”. La canto… y listo.

N.W: En los dos primeros temas la base ya estaba bastante avanzada, pero Unstoppable fue la primera canción que hicimos realmente desde cero juntos. Lois empezó tocando el riff de guitarra y a partir de ahí construimos todo. Antes de empezar solemos charlar un rato, tomar un té y luego empezar a grabar.

ENG:

L.P: Night Wolf usually has some music. I listen and think ah I got the lyrics for that. Sing them. BAM.

N.W: Like I've said before the first two songs of ours were already somewhat finished, but Unstoppable was the first song we made from the ground up together and Lois playing the guitar first really was the lead and what we built the whole song around.

4- Algunas canciones salen muy rápido y otras tardan más. ¿Cómo fue con esta?

Some songs come together really quickly, while others take more time. How was it with this one?

ESP:

L.P: Creo que esta se hizo en un día.

N.W: Sí, la canción se completó en una tarde en mi home studio. Lois se fue a casa y yo seguí trabajando al día siguiente haciendo algunos ajustes. Realmente fue una canción que fluyó muy fácil.

ENG:

L.P: This was made in a day I think!

N.W: Yes this song was completed in an afternoon at my home studio, Lois then went home and I continued into the next day where I did some tweaking and then it was done.

5- Mientras trabajaban en la canción, ¿hubo un momento donde pensaron “esto está yendo por buen camino”?

While you were working on the song, was there a moment where you thought “okay, this is going in the right direction”?

ESP:

L.P: El estribillo tenía algo especial. Aunque en realidad no escuché la canción completa como quedó hasta que estuvo terminada.

N.W: Sí, fue cuando armamos la parte del coro y la escuchamos varias veces. Ahí sentí que era el gancho del tema.

ENG:

L.P: The chorus had some pizazz. Although I didn’t hear the song as it is now until it was done.

N.W: Yes it was the chorus section once we played it back a few times. I could hear straight away that it was the hook for the song.

6- Ahora que “Unstoppable” ya está afuera, ¿qué sensación les dejó todo el proceso?

Now that “Unstoppable” is out, what feeling did it leave you with after the whole process?

ESP:

L.P: ¡Muy emocionada! Aunque también un poco asustada… ¿y si le va demasiado bien?

N.W: Estoy contento con el resultado. Es una canción con un toque muy personal y me alegra que ya esté en el mundo para que la gente la descubra.

ENG:

L.P: Pretty excited! Scared actually. What if it does TOO well.

N.W: I am happy with it. It has a very personal touch to it and I’m glad it is now out in the world.

7- ¿Dónde se imaginan escuchando “Unstoppable”? ¿Hay algún momento o lugar donde encaje perfecto?

Where do you imagine listening to “Unstoppable”? Is there a place or moment of the day where it fits perfectly?

ESP:

L.P: Antes de una entrevista de trabajo, manejando al trabajo, camino a una cita… o después de que la cita salió bien.

N.W: Para mí sería cerca del atardecer, en un momento donde alguien se detiene, se da cuenta de que ya no necesita huir y decide seguir adelante con determinación.

ENG:

L.P: Before a job interview, driving to work. On your way to a date. After getting the job. After the date went well etc.

N.W: I feel it would be around sunset and for me its like a scene where someone has stopped and realised they do not need to run anymore.

8- Desde que salió la canción, ¿hubo algún comentario o reacción que se les haya quedado grabado?

Since the song came out, has there been any comment or reaction that stuck with you?

ESP:

L.P: Una mujer escribió en una entrevista que la canción la golpeó emocionalmente a las 2 de la mañana. Me encanta imaginar ese tipo de momento personal.

N.W: Hemos recibido muy buenas reseñas, pero una que me quedó mucho fue de The Big Takeover, donde dijeron: “Como alguien que escribe sobre música todo el día, espero canciones como esta para alegrar el proceso”.

ENG:

L.P: A lady wrote an interview saying how it hit her at 2am in the feels. I love that personal moment.

N.W: We have had some really great reviews and one that stuck with me was from The Big Takeover saying “As someone who writes about music all day, I look forward to songs like this to brighten up the process”.
